breastfeeding

isn't

always easy,

but it's always worth it.

hi, my name is Alyssa

Hi, I’m Alyssa, the founder of A Wise Beginning. I’ve been supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and infant feeding since 2007. My journey into this work began after receiving exceptional care from midwives during my own pregnancy and birth. Their calm presence, reassurance, and unwavering support helped me feel confident and cared for, and they were instrumental in guiding me through the early days of feeding my baby.

What began as work as a doula, childbirth educator, and La Leche League Leader naturally evolved into midwifery and lactation consulting, as I witnessed how deeply families benefit from consistent, compassionate care during these tender transitions.

I believe feeding your baby should feel empowering, informed, and aligned with your family’s values. I’m here to walk alongside you—not with rigid rules or one-size-fits-all answers, but with respect, empathy, and evidence-based guidance.

When I’m not supporting new parents, you can find me on the tennis court, paddleboarding on the lake, or unwinding at my family cabin with a good book and a warm drink.

About
Baby on White Bed

when should i see a lactation consultant

nipple pain

Pain is common when you’re learning to feed your baby, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal. If your nipples are cracked, bleeding, or sore, or if you’re starting to dread feeding times, it is a good time to reach out for support.

latch issues

Even when you're doing everything "right," sometimes feeding just doesn’t feel easy. I can help you explore gentle adjustments that support a more comfortable and effective latch for both you and your baby.

supply concerns

If you’re wondering whether your baby is getting enough or you’re worried about your milk supply, I can help you understand what might be happening and offer tips or strategies to support your infant feeding goals.

blocked ducts

Clogged ducts can be uncomfortable and sometimes lead to mastitis. I can help you find relief and show you how to reduce the chance of it happening again.

pumping plans

Not sure where to start with pumping? I can guide you through what pump might be best for you, how often to pump, how long to pump, and how to check if your flanges are the right fit.

a difficult birth

If you had a hard birth, your feeding journey might need some extra care. Whether you’re nursing after surgery, managing delayed milk production, or feeding a preterm or NICU baby, I am here to support you through it.

lactation support involves...

personalized consultations

Personalized consultations are tailored to your unique needs and concerns. In these sessions, a lactation consultant offers one-on-one guidance, addressing specific breastfeeding challenges such as latch issues, milk supply concerns, or feeding difficulties. These consultations provide a supportive environment where you can openly discuss your experiences and receive individualized strategies to overcome breastfeeding hurdles effectively.

education & resources

Support packages include access to comprehensive educational materials and resources. These materials cover a wide range of topics such as breastfeeding techniques, proper latch and positioning, troubleshooting common breastfeeding problems, and advice on maintaining a healthy breastfeeding journey. These resources are invaluable references, empowering you with knowledge and confidence!

follow-up guidance

One of the key perks of a support package is ongoing follow-up support. Beyond the initial consultation, lactation consultants often offer follow-up sessions to track progress, address new concerns, and fine-tune strategies. This continuous guidance ensures that you receive sustained support and encouragement, allowing for adjustments and personalized recommendations as your breastfeeding journey evolves.

The consultation with Alyssa was really helpful... I am feeling more confident in breastfeeding my son now. I am so glad I had the appointment with her.

Thank you.
